Our students attend Enko Abidjan, the International Community School of Abidjan, IBSA and the other English-medium schools in Cocody. Most of them are francophone children learning in English, which shapes the work more than any single subject does.
One thing to make clear from the start. AbiCours hires for its own tutoring service, to support students enrolled in these schools. We do not recruit on behalf of Enko, ICSA, IBSA or any other school, and we have no affiliation with them. To apply to those schools, contact them directly.
What we expect
- A bachelor’s degree or higher in the subject you teach.
- At least three years of teaching experience, in a school or in sustained private tuition.
- The ability to teach in English, in writing and speaking, for the positions that require it.
- Working knowledge of at least one of the relevant programmes: IB, Cambridge or American curriculum. Failing that, genuine willingness to learn it.
- Residence in Abidjan for home tutoring. Online positions are open to teachers based elsewhere.
Three open positions
All positions are freelance, part-time, at students’ homes or online, on schedules agreed with you. Hours depend on your availability and on demand in your area of Abidjan.
IB teacher, Middle Years Programme and Diploma
You support MYP and Diploma Programme students, mainly in mathematics, physics and chemistry, biology or economics. The work covers the subject itself and the method the IB expects: assessment criteria, internal assessments, the extended essay.
Responsibilities
- Write a diagnostic report on the student’s level before the first lesson.
- Build a dated programme and keep to it, factoring in the school calendar.
- Teach at the family’s home or online, in English or French depending on the subject.
- Write a short report after every lesson, and a written review at mid-point.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in the subject, three years of teaching experience.
- Experience of the IB programme, or of a comparable international curriculum.
- Fluent written and spoken English for subjects assessed in English.
Cambridge teacher, Checkpoint, IGCSE and A Level
You prepare students for Cambridge examinations in mathematics, sciences or English. A large part of the work is past-paper practice and teaching students to answer exactly what the command word asks for.
Responsibilities
- Assess the student’s real level against Cambridge mark schemes.
- Work through past papers under timed conditions and mark them with the official scheme.
- Teach command words and the written form each paper expects.
- Write a short report after every lesson, and a written review at mid-point.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in the subject, three years of teaching experience.
- Knowledge of the Cambridge programme and its mark schemes, or experience in an English-medium school.
- Teaching in English.
American curriculum and academic English teacher
You work with students in the American curriculum, from elementary to Grade 12, and with francophone students who have just joined an English-medium school. The main issue is academic English: reading a long prompt, taking notes, writing a structured paragraph.
Responsibilities
- Assess subject knowledge and academic English separately.
- Work on comprehension of instructions, note-taking and writing in English.
- Support preparation for tests, projects and submitted assignments.
- Write a short report after every lesson, and a written review at mid-point.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher, three years of teaching experience.
- Professional-level English, written and spoken.
- Experience with francophone students learning in English is an advantage.
How hiring works
We reply to every application within one week, including when the answer is no.
Working with AbiCours
- Regular students followed over a cycle, not isolated hours.
- A defined framework: diagnostic, dated programme, written reports. You never meet a student without knowing what to do.
- An area of the city chosen with you, to limit travel across Abidjan.
- One person to talk to, not a call centre.
- Cover arranged by us when you cannot attend, so you never have to manage that with the family.
Pay is discussed at interview, based on the position, the programme and the number of hours.

Candidate questions
Do I need to be a native English speaker?
No. You need to teach properly in English, in writing and speaking, which is a different thing. Several of our teachers are Ivorian or Cameroonian and work in English without difficulty. Part of the interview is in English for the relevant positions.
I do not know the IB. Can I still apply?
Yes, if you know your subject and are willing to learn how the programme works. We share the assessment criteria and the reference documents. What does not work is meeting a Diploma student without having read them.
How many hours per week?
It depends on your availability and on demand in your area. Most of our teachers work between four and twelve hours a week, across two to four families.
What is the pay?
It is agreed at interview, based on the position, the programme, the student’s level and the number of hours. We prefer to discuss it directly rather than publish a figure that would not match your situation.
Do I need a work permit to teach in Côte d’Ivoire?
These are freelance positions, not salaried employment. If you are not an Ivorian national, make sure your residence status allows you to carry out a professional activity in Côte d’Ivoire before applying. Online positions are open to teachers based abroad.
Can I teach online only?
Yes. Online lessons are a growing part of our work, especially for less common subjects and for families outside Abidjan. You need a stable connection and a way to write on screen.
Are you hiring for Enko or for the American school?
No. AbiCours hires for its own tutoring service. We have no connection with those schools and do not forward applications to their HR departments.
Do you also hire for the French and Ivorian curricula?
Yes, continuously. Those positions are described on our French-language recruitment pages, linked below.
